What Do Tire Numbers Mean?

If it’s time to get tire service or new tires and you’re wondering “what do tire numbers mean?” you might be overwhelmed by the variety of different number combinations. The tire code shows you what size and type of tire you’re dealing with and what performance purpose it is used for. South Houston Nissan is here for Pearland drivers who are asking “what do the numbers on tires mean?” We’ve also got a great guide on how to check tire tread depth.

Decoding Your Tire Number Meaning

There are a few things you need to know when decoding your tire number meaning, including the size, load index, speed rather, and type of tire your vehicle requires to perform at its best. This all comes in the tire number. Let’s break down this code:

P215/65R15 95H

All of this seemingly unrelated information actually gives a complete picture when it comes to your tire’s characteristics. For instance:

“P” at the beginning means your tire is a P-metric tire, or in other words, it can be used in passenger vehicles. “LT” on the other hand means “light truck” and is meant for light-weight pickup trucks. If there’s no letter at the beginning, that means you’re in the possession of a Euro-Metric tire, which has a different load capacity entirely.

The “215” is the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. As a result, this means we’ve got a tire that’s 215 millimeters wide.

After that, you’ve got the aspect ratio code, which is “65” in this case. The aspect ratio is the height of the tire’s cross section related to its width. In this case, this means that this tire’s height is equal to 65% of the tire’s width. The bigger the aspect ratio your tire is, the bigger the sidewalls of your tire will be as a result.

If you’ve got an “R”, that means you’ve got a radial tire, a measure of the tire’s construction.

“15” tells you the wheel size from one end to the other, letting you know what tire can fit on the wheel in question. This code shows this tire is meant for a 15-inch wheel.

At the very end, you’ve got “95H,” which corresponds to the load index and speed rating for the tire. The load index, or 95, shows you how much weight the tire can handle when inflated the right way. This will fall in a range between 75 and 105 for passenger vehicles. The “H” corresponds to the speed rating, or how fast the tire can safely travel based on its load levels. The rating goes from A to Z and a tire with an “H” rating has a maximum speed of 130 mph.
