There is nothing that throws you off more than going to start your car and finding your battery is dead, and no doubt the next steps are searching “car battery installation near me”. At South Houston Nissan, we understand that Pearland drivers like the opportunity to take their car maintenance into their own hands. Installing a car battery seems like a simple process, however, there are a few important steps you should take to install it safely. Follow these steps for how to install a car battery and if you have any questions, contact our service department near Pasadena.

Battery Installation

Proper safety comes with ensuring the proper tools and parts are used. You’ll need: Wrenches, battery cleaning solution, a new battery, wire brush, pliers, and anti-corrosion spray. Be sure to wear thick rubber gloves to protect your hands and take care when removing the battery to avoid spilling battery acid. Find the parts you need at South Houston Nissan.

  1. Start with the engine off and the parking brake pulled. Pop the hood and locate the battery. With a wrench, loosen the first nut that connects the black cable (negative cable) to the battery. Using specific battery wrenches and pliers makes disconnecting easier.
  2. Once the nut for the black cable is loosened, twist and pull the cable off. If it doesn’t come off easily, don’t try to pry it off with another tool. This can damage the battery.
  3. Repeat the same steps and remove the red cable (positive cable) from the terminal.
  4. Loosen and remove the battery hold-down clamp. This keeps the battery from moving around the engine.
  5. The battery can now be removed. Be careful removing the battery, it can be heavy and dropping it can cause an unsafe leak.
  6. There may be corrosion on the battery tray or the hold-down clamp. To remove the corrosion, a baking soda and water solution or battery cleaning product can be used.
  7. Using the same cleaning product for corrosion, take a wire brush and clean the battery cable connectors.
  8. Install the new battery by placing it in the battery tray and tightening the hold-down clamp.
  9. If you have an anti-corrosion solution, spray it on the positive and negative terminal of the new battery before connecting. This helps prevent corrosion and extend battery life.
  10. Attach the battery cable to the terminals by connecting first the red cable, then the black cable.
  11. Check that the connections are secure by trying to move the battery.
  12. Replace any battery covers and start the car.
