How to Check Tire Tread Depth

The lion’s share of drivers in and around Pearland are already aware of how important it is to maintain proper tire tread depth, but not so many know how to check tire tread depth. We’ve decided to remedy that by putting together a quick but comprehensive overview to ensure you keep driving with total peace of mind through Deer Park and Pasadena.

Recommended Tire Tread Depth

It’s smart to know the recommended tire tread depth before you start thinking about how to check it. In general, a new tire will have a tread depth of 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. However, the following tires and vehicles may have deeper treads:

  • Winter Tires
  • Off-Road Tires
  • Heavy Trucks
  • Heavy SUVs

As the tread wears down, you’ll need to work harder to brake and will eventually find yourself at a higher risk of flats and blowouts.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear?

You can always use a ruler or a tire tread gauge, but Honest Abe can also give his candid opinion on your tire tread depth. Simply take out a penny and follow these steps:

  • Insert the penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing towards you, down and out.
  • Check how much of Lincoln’s head is visible. If all of his face is visible, you need new tires.
  • Perform the same test with all four tires across multiple locations. If there’s a significant difference in wear, you should probably have rotated your tires more.

Further Tire Care Tips

Since proper tire health affects efficiency, performance, safety, and more, you’ll want to do more than just check the tread depth. You should also:

  • Check for proper air pressure.
  • Look for signs of tire rot, disintegration, or damage.
  • Check the tires line up together.
